Different kinds of Dalapro hand filler:

What is hand filler?

Hand filler is a ready-mixed filler that is applied by hand using a filling tool. It is used to level out, repair and prepare walls and ceilings before painting and wallpapering.

There are different kinds of hand filler. The most common are:

  • All-round filler.
  • Low shrinkage hand filler.
  • Special filler for plasterboard joints, corners, wet rooms, outdoors, woodwork
and particularly vulnerable environments such as stairwells and public
    premises.

When is hand filler used?

Hand filling is a traditional filling method that is ideal for small renovation or new construction projects. Used to repair holes and cracks, for joint filling of plasterboard panels, corner filling and fine smoothing of walls and ceilings.

It is particularly suitable for small projects, for example if you have to apply filler to a single wall, a ceiling or just a few rooms. This technique is popular among professional decorators because of the precision and control it offers.

Filler applied by hand can be used on common substrates such as plasterboard, concrete, plaster, brick, wood, wallpaper and glass fibre fabric.

What is meant by coarse filler, medium filler and fine filler?

Many users look for coarse filler, medium filler or fine filler when they have to choose a filler. At Dalapro we prefer to use terms that describe the function and area of application.

What is often referred to as coarse filler corresponds to our low shrinkage fillers, and is suitable for filling large, uneven surfaces. Medium and fine fillers usually correspond to our all-round fillers.

Choosing a filler based on properties instead of degree of coarseness makes it easier to find the right product for each task.

Choose a hand filler from Dalapro – for professionals with high standards

Dalapro’s hand filler has been developed in close collaboration with professional decorators in order to meet the high standards that professional users have for function, performance and finish.

Dalapro gives you a filler of consistent, high quality that contributes to an ergonomic work method and an end result you can be proud of.

Our ready-mixed filler products are manufactured in Sweden in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The products have CE-marking, and many also have the Nordic Ecolabel, M1 and IAC Gold, as well as EPD documentation.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying hand filler

Image
Applying hand filler
Prepare the substrate

Make sure that the wall or ceiling is clean and dry. Remove dust, loose particles and any old paint that is coming loose.

Apply the filler

Use a putty knife to distribute the filler evenly over the surface. Putty knives with broader blades are a good idea for larger areas.

Use protective gloves.

Dry and sand

Allow the surface to dry before you sand it; it will then be ready for painting or wallpapering.

Drying time, durability and environmental tips when using hand filler

Drying time

The drying time depends on the external circumstances, such as temperature,
humidity and layer thickness. Different kinds of substrate also have different drying
times. It is important to let each layer dry properly before you continue applying filler
or start sanding. As a general rule, the filler should be dry after 12–24 hours.

Shelf life

Filler has a limited shelf life. Once packaging has been opened, the product should
be used within a few weeks, while unopened packaging will last for up to one year
from the manufacturing date.

Consider the environment

Any leftover filler should be taken to the nearest recycling centre. You can dispose of
cleaned packaging in the plastic recycling container at your local recycling station.

Take care when choosing your filler, tools and accessories

For the best results, it’s important to choose not only the right kind of filler, but also
the right packaging, tools and accessories – based on the kind of project you will be
working on.

Choice of packaging
Choose between 3-litre and 10-litre buckets for bigger jobs with hand filler, or 200 ml
and 400 ml tubes for minor repairs.

Filling tools
Available in different variants for different purposes – traditional smoothers, broad
smoothers, special tools for details and repairs.

Sandpaper
Available in different grain sizes and used to level and smooth the surface once the
filler has dried.

Accessories
Joint tape, corner beads and other supplementary accessories are used to reinforce
joints, create straight corners and ensure a durable, professional end result.
